In this paper a technique is described to simultaneously synthesize both sum and difference patterns of linear antenna arrays which utilize subarraying to increase the number of degrees of freedom above that Obtainable with the more conventional two‐section feed network. The approach described attempts to obtain an optimum sum (difference) and a “best compromise” difference (sum) pattern by dealing directly with the space factor zeros of the separately optimum sum and difference patterns and appropriately adjuring the subarray weights.
