A novel coherent optical receiver, suitable for LAN applications, is proposed. It is based on Stokes parameters detection and is insensitive to the instantaneous polarization state using a new decision criterion. Moreover, it is widely tolerant to laser phase noise and allows efficient utilization of channel bandwidth.
