Explicit formulas to predict the characteristics of a symmetrical five‐port microstrip ring coupler are obtained from a first‐order eigenmode analysis. Tests on a prototype coupler over the 2—4‐GHz bandwidth indicate that the agreement between theory and experiment is reasonably good.
