A heterodyne detection scheme for far‐infrared small angle scattered laser radiation is reported and demonstrated by measuring the known scattering from a thin wire scatterer. Frequency shifts were on the order of 10 Hz. A Golay cell was used as a detector. The results were compared with theoretical predictions and direct detection data. The method should be useful for scattering measurements of density waves in plasmas.
