The effective refractive index and single‐transverse mode condition in three‐layer BH laser diodes operating at 1.3 and 1.55 μm have been investigated for both TE and TM modes. The results can be useful in the design of laser diodes with improved light‐output coupling efficiency into single‐mode fibers and also to determine the corrugation period of DFB lasers.
