A novel surface‐emitting laser design that utilizes leaky mode emission is proposed. Power is coupled out of the active layer in a narrow beam by monolithically integrating a prism‐like structure with a conventional semiconductor laser. Threshold current densities and external efficiencies approximately 1 kA / cm 2 and 0.3, respectively, are estimated.
