The optical transfer function is derived for add‐drop resonator (ADR) using the signal flow graph method. A critical coupling condition is calculated in the presence of loss in the coupling regions. Effect of critical coupling and coupler loss in the light transmission is studied. A limited area was determined for optimum optical transmission of ADR. We introduced a semi‐empirical equation to correlate the geometric design of coupling gap with the coupling strength parameters (coupling coefficient, k , and coupling loss, γ ). Achieved results can be used in optical communication technology and the photonic sensor applications.
