In this article, an electrically compact end‐fire antenna with high pattern integrity operating in the 28 GHz band with an impedance bandwidth of 9% is proposed for mmWave 5G smartphones. The forward gain of the antenna is 8 to 10 dBi across the band. The effective radiating volume of the proposed antenna is 0.05 λ 3 indicating a high gain yield for the available physical footprint. The common data usage modes of the smartphone are portrait mode and landscape modes. In order to cater to this purpose, a compact orthogonal pattern diversity module is proposed with mutual coupling less than 15 dB across the operating band. The compactness of the module is illustrated with actual 3D‐printed mobile case which adheres to the dimensions of commercially available smartphones.
