A dual band dual mode patch antenna for on/off body communications is proposed in this letter. The antenna operates at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz with different radiation modes. The radiation pattern is omnidirectional at the lower frequency band while directional in the broadside at the higher frequency band. Through introducing a ground plane below the radiating patch, the influence of the human body on the performance of the proposed antenna is minimized and the specific absorption rate value is significantly reduced and is much lower than the standard limit value.
