In this article, a miniaturized dual‐band microstrip patch antenna is proposed, which is in essence a composite right/left handed unit with symmetrical slots and metallic pins. An effective design procedure is presented. The ratio of the higher center frequency to the lower one can be varied from 1.01 to 1.59 by adjusting specified parameters. A typical model has been fabricated and measured to validate the design concept. The model shows a dual‐frequency function and patch‐like radiations at 7.1 GHz for n = −1 mode and at 8.42 GHz for n = 0 mode respectively, both providing wide coverage angles in half space.
