Abstract We propose a single sideband three‐dimensional modulation technique for a passive optical network which has an insufficient signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR). We demonstrated a SE improvement of 1.65 times with 3dB lower SNR compared to a conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal.
