We proposed and demonstrated a complex sensor, which combined a tilted fiber Bragg grating and a long period fiber grating. We used this sensor to measure the surrounding refractive index and temperature of an unknown liquid. The measured range of the temperature and environmental refractive index were 30–70°CC and 1.33–1.4, respectively. The measured results have linearly trend with high sensitivity. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 59:1122–1125, 2017
