This article introduces a new approach for three‐dimensional ultrasound imaging using a line‐focused ultrasound transducer. Based on Schlieren imaging approach, the presented method demonstrates real‐time, two‐dimensional optical visualization of ultrasound waves using a CCD camera and presents fast three‐dimensional ultrasound imaging capability using a continuous scanning approach. An experimental setup was constructed and a target sample was successfully imaged using the proposed approach. Compared to the conventional ultrasound imaging approaches, this approach can improve the imaging acquisition time significantly and has a potential to be implemented for fast three‐dimensional ultrasound imaging. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
