In this letter, an improved electrical parameter extraction scheme for the microstrip line loaded with complementary split ring resonator (CSSR) is proposed. A CSRR loaded with microstrip line behaves as an effective negative permittivity media. The equivalent circuit of CSRR contains four electrical quantities and it needs four different characteristic frequencies for their accurate solution which was neglected in previous studies. In this work, a four variable problem is formulated and solved which accurately gives all the electrical parameters of CSRR equivalent circuit for ultra wide frequency range. The proposed technique is used for a parametric analysis of a rectangular CSRR unit cell. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 59:661–664, 2017
