The new interpretation of E‐shaped microstrip patch antenna is presented. E‐shaped antenna can be treated as a pair of symmetrically fed broadband diploes folded into compact structure with frequency band up to 25%. Proposed antenna was used as element to build pair of antenna arrays for 1.92–2.17 GHz and 1.5–1.75 GHz frequency bands. The electric size of proposed antenna arrays is about 1.3×1.3 wavelengths which is hardly reachable for air substrate single‐layer microstrip antennas operating in 15% bandwidth. The results of theoretical and experimental investigations of matching and gain properties of proposed antennas are presented. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
