This paper aims to present microstrip patch antenna prototypes with rectangular patch, where structures of photonic band gap and electromagnetic band gap in cylindrical geometry for different drilling heights were performed in the substrate. The main radiations properties were simulated using Finite Element Method (FEM) and compared with the measured results of the manufactured devices. A current surface reduction can be observed due EBG/PBG insertion and a measurement matching of return loss values, enabling the application on wireless communication. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
