A diamond shape defected ground structure (DGS) is deployed on a higher mode rectangular microstrip patch antenna (RMPA) to improve the antenna return loss ( S 11) bandwidth and fabrication tolerance at X‐band and millimeter wave (mm‐wave) frequencies. The DGS dimensions have been analyzed to study their effects on the antenna's performance. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:2836–2841, 2016
