ABSTRACT In this article, a miniaturized substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)‐integrated 2D dielectric resonator antenna array is presented. The proposed antenna array size is decreased by reducing the area occupied by the SIW feeding network. This is accomplished by folding the corporate feeding network part in a second dielectric substrate layer. The coupling between the two layers is achieved by using a transverse slot (E‐coupling) cut in the middle ground plane. The miniaturized antenna was fabricated and tested. The simulated and measured results show that the proposed miniaturized double‐layer array design provides a comparable reflection and far‐field performance compared to the single layer array design. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
