A new type of dielectric resonator antenna with consistent monopole‐shape radiation pattern across an ultra‐wideband operating spectrum of at least 15 GHz is presented. A hybrid resonator configuration along with three different matching enhancement methods including, composite dielectric, dielectric shaping, and step matching technique, is used to obtain this radiation performance. A radially dielectric constant variation structure is proposed to create the composite dielectric material. Deemed to be appropriate for spectrum sensing and UWB applications, the frequency domain responses of this antenna are experimentally presented and discussed. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
