An Ultra‐thin Miniaturized Metamaterial Perfect Absorber operating over the X‐band frequencies with improved selectivity performance is proposed. The structure uses rectangular patches partly encircled by L‐shaped metallic strips, placed diagonally on the top plane of the component and a concentric split‐ring in the center. The component exhibits broadband absorption response over the entire X‐band range with two absorption peaks at 7.8 GHz and 9.86 GHz, respectively. The structure has been simulated for different angles of oblique incidence and it gave good results under such circumstances. Also, the thickness of the substrate is very less (about 0.07λ, with respect to the center frequency of the bandwidth) and a comparative study of the proposed structure with other similar structures available in literature is furnished to establish the improved performance of the same. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
