The surface wave propagation along a multi‐coil wireless power transfer system is investigated with the motivation of extending power transfer range. First, the power transfer efficiencies of coil arrays with different numbers of repeaters are simulated and measured. Then the wave propagation along the array is investigated and its associated wave characteristics are extracted using a super resolution algorithm. A backward traveling surface wave is found to be the dominant propagation mechanism, and its decay constant decreases as the number of repeater increases. An empirical formula correlating the power transfer efficiency with the surface wave decay constant is proposed. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:2261–2265, 2016
