Periodic structures are widely used in order to provide different behavior on devices that operate in high frequencies. Some of them, are capable to change the constitutive parameters ε and µ, so that, the incident wave can assume a different behavior. Therefore, in this work, the tripole array is presented as an alternative tool to improve the performance of microwave systems, in terms of bandwidth, gain and resonance frequency. The equivalent circuit method in conjunction with the full‐wave simulation method was used in order to characterize the tripole array topology, for normal and oblique incidence. Measurements and simulated results are compared. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:1786–1790, 2016
