A compact wideband resonant cavity antenna is presented. A single layer of an approximately half‐effective‐wavelength‐thick partially reflecting surface, which has a very wide transmission band and the positive slope of a reflection phase against frequency, is employed to achieve very wide half power gain bandwidth. The experiment results demonstrate that the antenna has a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 49.1% (6–9.9 GHz) and a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 48.7% (5.9–9.7 GHz) with a maximum broadside gain of 14.9 dBi. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
