This work is focused on high‐speed multimode link for short haul communication by adopting hybrid optical add/drop multiplexing and mode division multiplexing schemes. 4× 10 GBps are successfully transported over 1 km multimode link by using Hermite Gaussian (HG) modes at 850 and 850.5 nm. Moreover, mode decomposition at receiver side is also reported for each channel. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:1613–1617, 2016
