Optical multicasting based on multiwavelength injection locking of a Fabry–Perot laser diode is proposed as a viable solution to implement real‐time optical switching in WDM optical networks, reducing the impact of Rayleigh backscattering induced crosstalk in bidirectional transmission, and allowing full wavelength reuse. Efficient low‐power optical injection for full duplex transmission at 1.25 Gb/s over 25 km of SMF is demonstrated. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:1466–1469, 2016
