ABSTRACT We propose a novel side‐shielded wireless power transfer coil for implantable medical devices. The side‐shielded coil consists of a resonator and a side‐shield structure, which is partially wrapped around the resonator. The side‐shield structure isolates the proposed coil from the human body effect and efficiently transfers power to the receiving coil. In addition, the proposed coil has a specific absorption rate approximately four times lower than that of a conventional spiral wireless power transfer coil. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
