A novel low profile planar antenna based on composite right/left‐handed transmission line (CRLH‐TL) on the carved circuit board is investigated. The CRLH‐TLs are presented as the general transmission lines possessing both left‐handed (LH) and right‐handed (RH) natures. The offered antenna has been fabricated of four composite right/left‐handed unit cells, each of which occupies the space of 0.004λ 0 × 0.01λ 0 × 0.001λ 0 , where λ 0 is free space wavelength at 0.5 GHz. The proposed antenna can be applied for the experimental frequency band of 0.5–5.5 GHz, related to 166.6% practical bandwidth. Also, the antenna exhibits measured gains and radiation efficiencies of 4.1 dBi and 62.7%, 7.2 dBi and 85.4%, and 5.8 dBi and 72.6% at 0.5, 3, and 5.5 GHz, respectively. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
