Design, simulation, and measurements of a horn‐fed X‐Band Fresnel Lens antenna is presented. The influence of the number of rings, substrate of choice and the respective near and far‐field measurements are shown. The antenna is designed to be used in a free‐space materials measurement setup, as a low cost and rugged alternative to dielectric horn antennas, therefore its focal area is defined and characterized. Measurements confirmed the simulation evaluations. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:2604–2609, 2015
