Two tunable interferometers based on photonic crystal fibers (PCF) and liquid crystals (LC) were designed and fabricated. In the first interferometer, the LC peripherally surrounds the PCF, while in the second, much more sensitive to external fields, the LC partially fills the fiber cladding holes. The devices may be applied to optical communications and sensing. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:2075–2079, 2015
