A novel technique for coupling enhancement of rectangular waveguide fed hemispherical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is presented in this article. Waveguide with tapered section at the end is terminated by a thick ground plane and a slot is cut at the center of the ground plane for exciting the DRA. Introduction of tapering at the end of the waveguide provides substantial improvement in matching between the waveguide and DRA. The effects of different antenna parameters on return loss characteristics are studied. The experimental results show reasonable agreement with simulated results. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
