In this article, a planar circular metal antenna is designed for ultrawideband applications. A modified design formula is proposed to predict the lower cut off frequency of the antenna. The error between theoretical and simulated lower cut off frequency is within 5% for variation of radius of the radiating element from 3 to 9 cm. A shorting strip is connected as a top inductive load to reduce the size of the antenna. The simulated and measured reflection coefficient, gain, and radiation pattern of the proposed shorted planar circular metal antenna are in good agreement. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
