A variation of the spot size reduction and power density enhancement problem have arisen in the study of focused array antennas for many applications such as hyperthermia. In this letter using nearly directional single‐element patch antenna, and optimizing phase distribution accuracy, power density enhancement, spot size reduction, and a significant reduction in the side lobe levels are achieved. The near‐field focused (NFF) array antenna worked at 2.4 GHz with size of 40 × 40 cm 2 . Both simulation and experimental studies are performed to validate NFF array antenna design and improvements. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:1590–1593, 2015
