A design proposal of a microstrip patch antenna with complementary split ring resonator metamaterial type is presented, and its influence in the antenna parameters are evaluated and compared with a reference designed antenna. The agreement of simulated and measured results of the projected antenna return loss can be observed. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:1326–1330, 2015
