In this work, an M‐shaped broadband microstrip patch antenna with modified ground plane is proposed. A U‐shaped slot is loaded on the ground plane. In this work, the effect of the size of the square shaped ground plane on the impedance bandwidth is investigated. The dimension of the square shaped proposed ground plane is 26 × 26 mm 2 which offers maximum 99% (2.94–8.7 GHz) simulated impedance bandwidth and maximum 3.66 dBi gain. The proposed antenna is simulated using Ansoft designer. The measured data exhibit agreement with simulated ones and it may be suitable for modern wireless communications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:1308–1312, 2015
