A design for circularly polarized (CP) patch antennas with broadband operation is described and studied. The design is based on a traditional cross slot antenna excited with a microstrip line through coupling. It is found that when the ground plane of the cross slot antenna, namely the slotted patch has a specific aspect ratio, the CP radiation with a 3‐dB‐axial‐ratio bandwidth of more than 30% can be generated. For such a slotted patch antenna, parametric analyses are performed to demonstrate how to achieve the broadband CP operation in a limited area. Simulated and measured results for the performances of the constructed prototype are also shown. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:1140–1143, 2015
