An improved compact bandpass filter (BPF) with ultrawide upper stopband on three‐layer liquid crystal polymer substrate is presented. In this work, a broadside‐coupled H‐shape resonator and open circuited with radial stub are used to realize compact BPF. The first BPF is designed with three broadside‐coupled H‐shape resonators, which are placed on the top layer and middle layer, respectively. To improve the selectivity and reduce the size while not widen the bandwidth, an improved filter based on the first filter is proposed, which adds two open circuited with radial stubs and removing two H‐shape resonators. The measured results show that the second filter has better selectivity and much more compact size of 6 mm × 6 mm (about 0.52λ g × 0.52λ g ) while keeping wide upper stopband and high rejection, comparing with the first filter, which size is 7 mm × 8 mm (about 0.61λ g × 0.7λ g ). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
