ABSTRACT In this letter, we propose a frequency tunable multiple input multiple output antenna at the frequency ranges of 704–960 MHz and low correlation performance over the tuning frequencies. The proposed antenna covers various long‐term evolution service bands: band17 (704–746 MHz), band13 (746–787 MHz), band5 (824–894 MHz), and band8 (880–960 MHz). To achieve wideband operation for the main antenna, an inverted L‐shaped slit is adopted on the conventional folded PIFA structure. The subantenna has multiple resonance from which on operating bands can be chosen by controlling the capacitance of a microelectromechanical system that is connected to the end of the proposed loop antenna. By choosing different antenna types for the main and subantennas, acceptable isolation characteristic was achieved as well as suitable envelope correlation coefficient characteristics. Both simulated and measured results are shown to illustrate the MIMO capabilities of the proposed structures. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:833–838, 2015
