In this article, π/4 coupled microstrip line is used in the design of two‐way Wilkinson power divider for compact circuit size. A capacitor is shunted to compensate the phase velocities between even and odd mode in coupled microstrip line and its position can be placed arbitrary in the coupled microstrip line. The capacitance value is determined by effective dielectric constants of substrate, coupling strength, and its position in the coupled microstrip line. Design charts, frequency responses, calculated bandwidths, and several design examples are presented. In experiment, one circuit was fabricated, the measurement results showed good agreement with theoretical results. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:328–332, 2015
