The problem of 3D near‐field source localization using virtual arrays is addressed. The proposed method is based on a spherical wave steering vector whose performance of 2D direction‐of‐arrival and range estimation is evaluated via MUSIC‐based algorithm. Experimental results in comparison with simulation ones are presented to validate its efficacy. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:238–242, 2015
