This article presents dual‐band designs of aperture‐coupled vertically mounted strip antenna (ACVMSA). Two vertically mounted (VM) patches on either side of the VM substrate are excited via the coupling aperture to support dual‐band operation. A parametric study is undertaken to examine the effects of the related structure parameters and develop a design strategy. It is known that each resonant frequency and the corresponding coupling amount can be controlled nearly independently of each other, giving an advantage for dual‐band ACVMSA design. In addition, the antenna supports the same linear polarization. The antenna designed was fabricated, and the measured results were found to agree well with those calculated. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:157–160, 2015
