An innovative optimum waveform design approach is introduced for synthesizing the radiation beam pattern of coherent multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) radar to minimize the interference between the radar and other radio systems operating at the same frequency without degrading radar target detection performance. The proposed antenna array waveform design approach allows both amplitudes and phases to be optimized to synthesize the best radiation beam patterns. Given the designed waveforms for coherent MIMO radar, a virtual beamforming filter is used for virtual transmit–receive beam refocusing processing to achieve the maximum target processing gain. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
