A simple method to design a wideband directive antenna using a folded semicircular dipole (FSCD) antenna is presented. A planar semicircular dipole (SCD) antenna consists of two semicircular‐shaped arms with a small gap in between. In the proposed antenna, the two semicircular‐shaped arms are folded along the arm axis. The effects of varying the folding angle on the input reflection coefficient and the broadside gain of the FSCD antenna are investigated. A prototype of the proposed FSCD antenna with a folding angle of 60° is fabricated on an FR4 substrate, and its performance is compared with that of the planar SCD antenna. The measured frequency band of the planar SCD antenna for a voltage standing wave (VSWR) <2 is 0.91–20.0 GHz (182.6%) whereas that of the proposed FSCD antenna for a VSWR <2.3 is 0.99–18.79 GHz (180.0%). Broadside gain of the proposed antenna is above 1.5 dBi with maximum value of 8.1 dBi in the frequency range of 1–12 GHz, whereas broadside gain of the SCD antenna is above 1.5 dBi with maximum value of 3.2 dBi in the frequency range of 1–3.5 GHz. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
