A novel microstrip structure is proposed to design a miniaturized branch‐line coupler operated at 2.4 GHz for Wireless LANs applications. By analyzing different microstrip cells, one method is presented to obtain the perfect input impedance matching condition and another one is proposed to control the resonance frequency. In comparison to the previous works, the proposed coupler features good isolation and negligible phase imbalance equal to 42.9 dB, and 0.09°, respectively. Also in comparison to all of the references in this article, the proposed coupler has a minimum size of 175.1 mm 2 . Finally, the designed structure is fabricated and measured. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:2110–2113, 2014
