A method to generate ultrawideband picosecond impulses with fast fall‐time is presented. This impulse generator is based on a broadband bipolar transistor and a nonlinear transmission line comb generator. The transistor works in fast switch‐on mode and emits impulses with steep leading edges, which are further compressed by the comb generator. The experimental short impulses of 725 ps duration and 180 ps fall‐time were generated with output harmonic up to 10 GHz. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:2165–2167, 2014
