A high gain broadband circular microstrip patch antenna with spiral shape slot‐loaded square ground plane is presented. The effects of introduction of spiral shaped slots of the square ground plane on different parameters of the antenna are studied. Maximum impedance bandwidth of 123% is obtained with modified square ground plane of size 60 × 60 mm. Highest gain achieved is 6 dBi. Simultaneously, the antenna also exhibits a compactness of 93%. The simulated results are confirmed experimentally. The proposed antenna is simple in structure and may be widely used in wireless communications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
