A compact dual‐band slot antenna with capacitor loading is proposed for the wireless local area network bands (2.4–2.49 and 5.15–5.35 GHz). The antenna is composed of a modified L‐shaped slot and a capacitor. The capacitor is used to generate two surface‐current paths on the ground and to miniaturize the antenna size. The proposed antenna has an omni‐directional radiation pattern with antenna peak gains of 2.2 dBi at 2.44 GHz and 2.7 dBi at 5.25 GHz. Radiation efficiencies are greater than 60% over the operating frequency bands. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:1653–1658, 2014
