ABSTRACT Multimode interference couplers (optical splitter and cross coupler) based on photosensitive hybrid sol‐gel material derived from vinyltriethoxysilane, tetraethoxysilane, and tetrabutoxytitanate precursors are demonstrated. The couplers are fabricated on quartz substrate. A cost effective chemical etching technique is used in the couplers fabrication process to take advantage of the photosensitive nature of the hybrid material. The output power imbalance is measured to be less than 0.8 dB while the measured maximum crosstalk is −19.2 dB. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:1214–1218, 2014
