A microstrip antenna with reduced monostatic radar cross section (RCS) is presented. The RCS reduction is realized by replacing the solid ground plane of the reference antenna with a complex ground plane composed of bandstop frequency selective surface unit cells. In the mean time, the radiation performances are properly maintained. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:1200–1204, 2014
