We present a simple ultrashort optical pulse generator based on step recovery diode, short‐circuited transmission line and relaxation oscillation effect suppression with reduced dc bias. Experimental results achieved a 80‐ps optical pulse with 655 nm AlGaInP laser diode (LD) and a 200‐ps optical pulse with 420‐nm GaN‐based LD. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
