An investigation of radiated power enhancement of infinitesimal quadrupole source using metamaterial shell is presented. It has been demonstrated that a double negative shell surrounding the quadrupole can cancel both the self and mutual reactance within the quadrupole elements. Moreover, a uniform gain characteristic can be achieved over a wide range of shell thickness. The effects of loss, present in the metamaterial shell, are also taken into account for this investigation. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:2620–2624, 2013
